Our Executive Director

Meet Nicole Hanson-Mundell, an expert on criminal justice policy and re-entry in Maryland and the Executive Director of Out for Justice.

Nicole Hanson-Mundell is an expert on criminal justice policy and reentry in Maryland. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Out for Justice, a returning citizen, a member-led nonprofit organization working to reform local and statewide reentry policies. Nicole leads Out for Justice by advancing its mission to engage, educate and empower those with criminal records to lead the change they want to see. In this role, she has organized large-scale expungement clinics, state-wide Get Out to Vote campaigns, and supports high-risk individuals in navigating life after release. Nicole led Out For Justice in collaboration with Morgan State University to conduct a re-entry health needs assessment research project in Baltimore City.

Additionally, in her role as Executive Director, she is also a coalition builder and connector around issues of re-entry throughout Maryland. To further engage communities outside of Baltimore City, Nicole serves as an advisor to organizations like Life After Release and FRESH, two organizations that serves the reentry community in Prince George’s County. She leads OFJ as the only directly impacted group on The Task Force to Study Maryland Criminal Gang Statue initiated by Governor Hogan. She serves as a member of the Afro Newspaper editorial board. Nicole remains connected with many of the returning citizens she has worked with in order to ensure their ability to reintegrate back into the community after serving time for serious offenses.

In addition to her role with Out for Justice, Nicole works as a recruiter in workforce development for a non-profit, served as the executive assistant to now State Senator Jill P. Carter, and worked for 10 years as a medical technician at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.

Her passion for re-entry work comes from her own life experience, which she harnesses as a tool to advocate for effective and practical legislation that positively impacts the community that she serves.
