Out For Justice is funded by the Catholic Campaign For Human Development and the Open Society Institute and by donations from our members and supporters.
OSI
The Open Society Institute–Baltimore focuses its work exclusively on three intertwined problems: untreated drug addiction, an overreliance on incarceration, and obstacles that impede youth in succeeding inside and outside the classroom. OSI-Baltimore also supports the Baltimore Community Fellows, a corps of social innovators, now over 100 individuals, who work directly to revitalize underserved communities.
For the last 11 years, OSI-Baltimore has been acknowledged for its tenacious approach to solving the biggest challenges in this city. OSI-Baltimore looks for the root causes of problems and digs in—collaborating with city leaders and community members, sharing research and innovative ideas from around the country, finding potential solutions, and implementing changes that work and stick. Its accomplishments and impacts are noted throughout its website.
CCHD
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development and the
Social Ministry Convocation: A Look Back
IF YOU WANT PEACE, WORK FOR JUSTICE …… Pope Paul VI
Founded in 1970 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was given a two pronged charge:
• To help groups of poverty-level-income people help themselves.
• To educate our American Catholic people in understanding, living and promoting the Gospel-based principles of Catholic social justice teachings.
Every Bishop was asked to form a diocesan committee to carry out these charges and each committee would be moderated by a diocesan director of the local CCHD. For 33 years, thousands of self-help groups have received grants from both the national and local CCHD committees:
• for community organizing
• creating job opportunities
• economic development projects
Abell
When The Abell Foundation was inaugurated half a century ago, Chairman Harry C. Black and the founding board members set an agenda that allocated grants for schools, hospitals, and human service organizations reaching out to the disadvantaged in the Baltimore community and the region. In the past two decades, the Foundation has sharpened its focus to address complex challenges to break through the cycles of urban poverty. Today, the Foundation places the highest priority on creating solutions that are both innovative and will ensure accountability. This is the commitment of The Abell Foundation: to give hope by opening the doors of opportunity to the disenfranchised, knowing that no community can succeed and thrive if those who live on the margins are not included. We invite you to use this website to visit our Publications/Research section where you'll find thought-provoking perspectives on issues affecting the community at large.
